Vision

The mission of the Butte-Silver Bow Planning Department, under the direction of the Planning Board, is to sustain and improve the health, safety, convenience and welfare of the citizens of Butte-Silver Bow and to plan for the future development of the community. Planning for the optimum land uses and orderly development of Butte-Silver Bow recognizes:

  • The need for adequate transportation, health, educational and recreational facilities
  • The needs of agriculture, industry and business as related to future growth
  • The needs of residential areas to promote and provide healthy surroundings for family life
  • The growth of the community shall be proportionate with and promote the efficient and economical use of public funds

Responsibilities

The Planning Department provides community planning and development services to Butte-Silver Bow County. The Department completes a formal review of development proposals for compliance with the community's goals, objectives and policies as identified in the Butte-Silver Bow Comprehensive Plan.

The Planning Department is responsible for the administration of several programs including:

  • Zoning
  • Subdivision Review
  • Floodplain Management
  • Excavation and Dirt Moving Permits
  • Comprehensive Plan Development and Implementation
  • Transportation Planning
  • Building and Code Enforcement
  • Geographic Information System Mapping (GIS)
  • Land Records

Planning staff serve as a resource to elected and appointed officials and the community at large. Additionally, staff serves to support the Butte-Silver Bow Planning Board, the Zoning Commission and the Zoning Board of Adjustment.
