Solid Waste and Recycling Services

The Solid Waste Division provides residential and commercial waste disposal. There is no charge to residents when they dispose of waste generated on residential properties if they have paid the annual solid waste fee. This fee is assessed annually on property tax statements.

Landfill Site
The main landfill is located several miles west of Butte off of Interstate-90. The facility is just north of Rocker, approximately 1 mile from the I-90/Rocker interchange, at 121074 N Browns Gulch Road.

Disposal Hours
The main landfill is open seven days a week, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:50 p.m., with large loads not accepted after 5:30 p.m. After-hours disposal during the summer is from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for small household loads only.

Recycling
Butte-Silver Bow works with local businesses and non-profit organizations to provide the community with the best possible recycling service options. In addition to the self-service options below, curbside recycling is available directly from McGree Trucking for an additional fee, please call them at (406) 723-3728 or visit their website for more information. 

Recycling bins for paper, plastic and cardboard are available for the public at the following locations: 
The Butte Landfill accepts the following: automotive batteries, cardboard, metals, newspapers, and oil.

Aware, Inc. can accept paper, plastic, and cardboard at their main recycling facility at 640 S. Arizona St, 1-800-432-6145.

Pacific Steel can also accept cardboard and plastic as well as metal at 905 Gaylord Ave, 406-782-0402.

Metal can also be recycled at H & H Trading, 804 S. Arizona St, 406-782-4962.

Recycling Electronics
The Butte community can recycle electronic equipment at the following locations:

  • Staples at 3636 Harrison Ave, 406-494-1000, and visit the Staples website for more information on their recycling programs.
  • Pacific Steel at 905 Gaylord Ave, 406-782-0402.
The National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT, 3040 Continental Drive) also holds an annual electronics recycling event. For more information on that event, contact 800-275-6228 or visit the NCAT website at www.ncat.org.
